From P to Perfection: Decoding Portly Suit Measurements

What is a Portly Suit?

Portly suits are designed to maintain a liberal cut through the waist. Portly fitting is often confused with classic fitting. While both of them are considered loose fitting, they target different body shapes.

Portly fitting came to the public first in the 1950s and 1960s. After WWII, designers realized the need to make suits that cater to different body types. Portly suits became very popular among people who have more in the midsection than in the chest. But this brings another question...

How to choose a Portly Suit?

Here are a few quick tips to help you choose the proper fit:

  • The Fit
    • Try to get accurate measurements, if possible.
    • Your chest and waist measurements are the main focus for a Portly suits
    • Your jacket should be able to be closed comfortably without pulling
    • Your pants should have a higher rise in the front

    • Breathable fabrics have a nice amount of flexibility, like wool!
  • The Style
    • Single Breasted suits are usually more flattering
