The Ultimate Guide to Tuxedos

Tuxedos are the ultimate formal wear. When someone sees a tuxedo, they see glamour and luxury. Certain events call for black-tie attire, and that's where the tuxedo really shines. Award ceremonies, fundraisers, and galas are all usually exclusive and designed to feel special. Dressing your absolute best is always a must when you're amongst the elite!

A common question we often hear is, "Why are tuxedos considered so formal, and what makes them different from a regular suit for men?" Fortunately, suitsoutlets.com has the answer for you.

There are a few key differences between a Suit and a Tuxedo. A suit is built for everyday life, church, and nice dinners. Tuxedos, on the other hand, are the epitome of formal wear, all intended to make you feel like the night is going to be the most important night of your life.

Tuxedo and Suit Comparison

The History of the Tuxedo

The tuxedo wasn’t always the suit of glamour like it is today. The tuxedo's history actually starts back in 1886 at Tuxedo Park, in Tuxedo Park, New York. That's where the suit got its name! The story goes that a young Griswold Lorillard introduced a shorter dinner jacket to his elite club. He was tired of his long jacket tails getting in the way while he sat or danced. That one small change became a style revolution, and soon the "tuxedo" was the must-have look for men in the most exclusive circles.

How to Wear a Tuxedo

High society has always operated by its own rules. The rule of thumb for when to wear a tuxedo is based on the time of day the event takes place. This rule dates back to the Victorian era. This rule applies to the current day as well: if the event is during the day and ends before 6 pm, it's probably not formal enough to warrant a tuxedo. However, if the event is at night and ends any time after 6 pm, a tuxedo can and should be worn.

The key to pulling off a sharp and dazzling look is all about the details. Your dress shirt must be crisp, with a neat bow tie. Your cufflinks should be noticeable but not too flashy. Your pocket square should be clean and folded neatly. You should also wear dress shoes - no sandals or sneakers at these types of events! Some think cummerbunds are too much, while others believe they complete the look. We think it makes you look even more dapper, but wearing one is ultimately up to you.
